As temperatures drop in Traverse City and the surrounding region, staying warm while waiting for public transit becomes a priority for many riders. At BATA, we understand how important it is to feel safe, sheltered, and comfortable during your commute — especially in the fall and winter months.
Here’s what you need to know about shelter locations, warming options, and how to make your ride more comfortable when the weather turns cold.
Solar-Powered Shelters for a Brighter Commute
BATA has installed solar-powered bus shelters across several high-traffic routes. These shelters not only protect riders from wind, rain, and snow, but also include interior lighting powered by solar panels. This ensures better visibility during early mornings and darker evenings, adding an extra layer of comfort and security during your wait.
Current solar shelter locations include:
-
Hall Street Transfer Station (Downtown Traverse City)
-
East Bay Plaza
-
Grand Traverse Commons
-
Northwestern Michigan College (Main Campus)

Warming Stations at Transfer Hubs
Two of BATA’s main hubs — Hall Street and Cass Road Transfer Stations — include indoor waiting areas that remain open during service hours. These indoor facilities are heated, equipped with seating, and offer public restrooms. You’ll also find route information, real-time bus tracking monitors, and friendly BATA staff who can assist with questions.
If you have time between transfers or simply need to warm up, these hubs offer a great place to stay comfortable before continuing your trip.
Tips for Staying Warm While Riding
Even with access to shelters and warming stations, it’s always good to plan ahead during colder months. Here are a few quick tips:
-
Dress in layers and wear insulated gloves, hats, and waterproof boots.
-
Bring a thermos with a hot drink to keep your hands and body warm.
-
Download the BATA Link app to track your bus in real time — minimizing your wait outside.
-
Arrive at your stop a few minutes early, but not too early, to limit your exposure to the cold.
Ongoing Improvements
BATA is continuously working to expand and improve rider amenities. As part of our long-term commitment to sustainability and rider comfort, more solar shelters and warming options are being evaluated for future installation.
Community input plays a huge role in determining where additional shelters are needed. If you have a suggestion for a stop that could benefit from a shelter, you can submit a request through our Questions or Comments form.
Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to class, or exploring Traverse City without a car, BATA is here to make your journey as safe and comfortable as possible — even when the weather isn’t.
