BATA Special Services

Buddy System

The Bay Area Transportation Authority and the Northern Michigan Alliance for Independent Living are partnering to offer a free service to help new bus riders feel comfortable with riding the bus. The Buddy System is a free service that shows potential bus riders how to use BATA and its services, including the fixed-route Cherriot system. Many people may be interested in using public transportation, but are intimidated because they haven’t been on a bus in many years, they don’t feel comfortable using a bus schedule, or they’re not familiar with Cherriot bus routes.

Here’s how the program works:

  1. Interested riders who would like to work with a BATA Buddy can call NMAIL before they plan on using a bus.
  2. NMAIL will then contact a BATA Buddy, and have that person come to a new passenger’s home at a designated time.
  3. The BATA Buddy will board the bus and ride with the new passenger until the trip is completed.

BATA believes strongly in teaching individuals how to use the system in an effort to encourage their independence, and show all the benefits that public transportation provides. BATA provides Buddy System riders with a punch card for six free rides to allow them an opportunity to learn the bus system at no cost. To learn more about the Buddy System, please call NMAIL at 231-922-0903.
