The Bay Area Transit Authority (BATA), in partnership with Leelanau County Senior Services, is offering a new service tailored toward seniors and persons with disabilities called Leelanau Wellness. Leelanau Wellness is a door-to-door transportation service for Leelanau County residents for health and wellness trips to and from Traverse City. Funding for this pilot service is made possible by a recent grant received from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indian’s 2% Allocation program.
Dedicated Leelanau Wellness buses will pick up riders at their door and be able to bring residents to and from locations such as:
· Tom’s West Bay grocery store
· BATA’s Hall Street Transfer Station
· Munson Medical Center
· Royal Drive medical appointments
· Oleson’s West grocery store
· Meijer (US-31)
· Copper Ridge medical campus
· Grand Traverse Bay YMCA
· Other health and wellness appointments in the direct vicinity
This mid-day timeframe of 10am – 4pm offers transportation during a block of time when residents have expressed the need for additional service. Leelanau Wellness rides will cost $6.00 one-way, with reduced fares ($3.00 one-way) available for seniors, students, and persons with disabilities.
Reservations can be made by calling 231.941.2324 and requesting to schedule a Leelanau Wellness ride.
BATA has heard from Leelanau County residents they would like more door-to-door rides, with no bus to bus transfers required, and BATA is working to meet this need with the Leelanau Wellness pilot and hopefully expand services in the future.
